I remember being told in my early Christian days that we could be so spiritually minded that we would be of no earthly good. I can’t even begin to say that I grasped what was actually being said and so if I asked the same person today what she was trying to portray perhaps I would get a totally different answer. However, in my own understanding, I disagree! In fact, I believe just the opposite to be true. We can only be of any earthly good if we are spiritually minded.
I imagine it all depends on what we mean by ‘earthly good’. My definition of earthly good, in part, would be doing exactly what the Lord has for each of us to do….while we sojourn here. In that respect….that would include all the inhabitants of the earth, even the reprobate.
Proverbs 16:4 “The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil”
Daniel 4:35 “And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”
As Christians however, we actually live our theology every day and if we weren’t spiritually minded how then could we:
‘believe on the name of Jesus’
‘trust in the Lord with all our hearts’
‘worship in spirit and in truth’
‘count it all joy’
‘put on the armour’
‘long for the sincere milk of the word’
‘submit ourselves unto authority’
‘grow in the grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus’
‘be of one mind’
‘suffer for Christ’s sake’
‘put off the old man’
‘put on the new’
‘love the brethren’
‘forgive 70 x 7’
I think you get the picture that comes to my mind. I find in this life I can’t be spiritually minded enough as I yearn to ‘think on these things and ponder them in my heart’ constantly. When I choose to study the scripture instead of washing my windows I imagine some would say I’m not being any earthly good, but I always think the windows can wait another day and…..they do!
To be spiritually minded means that the Spirit himself can bear witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God and that we can know our heavenly Father through His Son Jesus Christ, the Word!
All praise be to Him alone!
